Looks Like It Was A Kite Day Today ....

Myself and Mr Tyke began at Low Moor but soon became fed up with the wind and cold temperatures .. We decided to go and use the viewing bench overlooking Midhope Res ..

Results were ..

3 common buzzards, 2 kestrels, a total of 14 lesser black-backed gulls heading SW and a healthy flock of c45 crossbills in the conifers beside the res .. On Midhope Res were a brood of 7 mallard chicks ..

At 2:50 we picked up 2 birds on the horizon over Thorpes's Brow .. The first being a red kite which duly drifted right over us and headed out towards Langsett .. The second bird was also confirmed as being a red kite and this one disappeared over the horizon towards Ewden ... At 3:25 we then saw another one in the same area as the first 2 birds were picked up .. Obviously it's a possibility that the one heading over to Ewden had done a 'U' turn and had come back around again but we will never know for sure ..

On returning home to High Green I looked out of my back window and watched another kite drift low over my estate before disappearing SW towards the Charlton Brook area ..

A Red Kite was seen at Wharncliffe Crags yesterday afternoon. It was picked up coming from the direction of More Hall Reservoir circled high and continued east per SBSG website. This was probably the second of the two birds picked up thus making the third bird, more than likely, a different bird.
