Bolton Ings - Sunday 8th December

A mild day today, 9c this morning at 07.30 when I started out, clear at first but soon clouded over and wind picked up. Very quiet birdwise, 3 female Goldeneye probably best thing plus Coot at 343 could be a record count, I will have to check my notes. No Little Grebes on the main pools but 3 on the river Dearne adjacent to Bolton Common along with 1 Redshank, 1 Grey Wag and 1 Kingfisher. Full list:- Grey Heron 3, Mute Swan 12, Canada Goose 44, Grey Lag Goose 1, Cormorant 4, Little Grebe 3, Mallard 12, Teal 23, Gadwall 93, Shoveler 8, Wigeon 13, Tufted Duck 16, Pochard 12, Goldeneye 3, Coot 343, Moorhen 16, Lapwing 94, Snipe 1, Redshank 1, Black Headed Gull 141, Common Gull 46,   GBBGull 8, Herring Gull 2, Sparrowhawk 1, Jay 3, Fieldfare 3, Redwing c60, Grey Wagtail 1, Kingfisher 1.

Decided to compare todays birds to those on same day last year, species and counts very similar, the only significant change was Coot at 206 - 67% increase from last year to this. Also had a cream crown Marsh Harrier this day last year.
