Carlton Marsh

The only birds of note today were the 2 Little Ringed Plovers that were on the wader scrape (L & A Corrall).

3 Oystercatchers that flew west from the Pinfold Hotel, Cudworth at 10.00hrs were probably the same 3 that left Edderthorpe Flash north at 11.00hrs. Were they the Ferrymoor Flash adults with their 1 fledged young?

A male Banded Demoiselle was seen near the gate at Edderthorpe Flash (CG).

A Little Owl has been seen in Low Cudworth over recent days (L & Corrall).

Carlton Marsh

A Little Ringed Plover was on the wader scrape again.

Our working group was busy strimming the embankment path all along its length (3/4 of a mile).

A Red Kite was seen flying low (at about 20ft) over White Cross Road, Cudworth at 11.00hrs (Andrew Corrall).

Carlton Marsh

A Little Ringed Plover, 4 Lapwings, a drake Teal and a Lesser Black-backed Gull were on the wader scrape this afternoon with a Mallard and her brood of 10. 

The LBB Gull tried to nick one, but the female Mallard made sure it didn't.

A large female Grass Snake swam across the water.

A Little Ringed Plover and a drake Teal were on the wader scrape. Flying over it were 2 Swallows, 2 Swifts, and 12 House Martins flew north (Les & Andrew Corrall).

A pair of Canada Geese have 6 goslings and a pair of Coot have 2 small young. 2 Sand Martins, 2 House Martins and 3 Swallows were hawking for insects. An Oystercatcher called and 4 Pairs of Lapwing were alarming nearby (CG).

Littleworth Park - Monk Bretton & Carlton Marsh

Littleworth Park

Insects on this interesting site included 24 Small Heath, 20 Dingy Skipper and 7 Common Blue butterflies.

Moths on show, 13 Burnet Companion, 9 Yellow Shell, 24 Mother Shipton and 1 Straw Dot.

Also of note 1 Squash Shield Bug and 2 Broad-bodied Chasers.

27 Bee Orchids are in bloom (Chris Parkin).

This evening 6 House Martins, 3 Swallows and 3 Swifts were feeding over the wader scrape and a drake Teal was feeding on it.

An Orange-tip butterfly was seen during the morning (CG).

A Mallard was found with 7 eggs but no sign of the duck. Another female was on the wader scrape with 10 small young.

A Little Ringed Plover was on the wader scrape in the evening (Andy Morgan).

Insects included 2 Burnet Companion and a Cinnabar moth and 4 Thick-legged Beetles.

A Fox was on the prowl and spring flowers included Southern Marsh Orchid and Kidney Vetch (Chris Parkin).

A Red Kite circled over Field Drive in Low Cudworth from 09.00hrs until 09.35hrs (Richard Laverack).

There were 6 LBB and 1 Herring Gull on the wader scrape this morning. (K. Bannister).

Yesterday a Peregrine Falcon attacked a Red Kite at nearby West Green (N. Lunn).

Ferrymoor Flash
Drake Pochard, 17 Greylags, 3 pairs of Canada Geese with broods of 5, 4 and 12. Mallards with broods of 7 and 8 very small young and 3 that were well-grown. A Moorhen pair have 3 young. 2 Oystercatchers were feeding at least 1 well-grown young and 1 Little Ringed, and 1 Ringed Plover were nearby. 

Cudworth Common

Although the ash plain and the flashes are very much abused by off-roaders, squads and 4 by 4's, the site still manages to produce a good deal of flora and fauna. Today 2 pairs of Lapwing, probably with young, with Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat, Mistle Thrush and 2 singing Reed Warblers.

Cotton Grass is thriving on the ash plain and Southern Marsh Orchids are common.
A female Broad-bordered Chaser added even more colour.

A female Shoveler was new in today and a mallard was with 10 very small young (K. Bannister).

Also present 2 Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Great Spotted Woodpecker. 

A Goldcrest, 4 Song Thrush and 1 Mistle Thrush were all singing (L & A Corrall).

A female Marsh Harrier flew over west.  

(Primary missing - so likely to be bird seen at Calder Valley and Pugneys in recent weeks.).

Common Tern 2.    Goldeneye 1 female.

All the common birds are settling down to breed and the migration is largely over consequently it was fairly quiet on the bird front.

So our attention will be switching to other forms of wildlife over the next few weeks.

Today's servey of the Western Meadow produced 1 Common Swift, 2 Silver Y and 10 Burnet Companion Moths. 

Butterflies included 1m Brimstone, 1 Dingy Skipper, 1 Small Copper and 2 Small Heath (CG)

In addition a Common Blue was seen to the east of the reserve (JP).

Carlton Marsh 14th to 18th May

 2 Ringed Plovers and 1 Little Ringed Plover were on the wader scrape on the 14th (R.J. Boland). They were followed by a Redshank on the 15th and 16th (K. Bannister et al). A Cuckoo was also present.

Today 18th May. A late arriving Lesser Whitethroat was singing and 2 Lapwings were present (JP).

South Kirkby Industrial Park

1 Grey Partridge.

The first Brown Argus (2) and Common Blue (2) of the year were on the wing. Also 27 Dingy Skipper, 16 Small Heath and 14m Brimstone. 
 
Day flying moths include 4 Small Yellow Underwing, 8 Mother Shipton and the more nocturnal Ruby Tiger. 
 
Dragonflies abroad an early Emperor, 3 Broad-bodied Chaser, and 8 Large Red Damselfly.
 
34 Thick-legged Beetles were counted.
 
Southern Marsh and 3 Bee Orchids were in bloom (Chris Parkin)

An Oystercatcher flew north from the wader scrape at 06.55hrs (Keith Bannister).

A Peregrine in stoop mode was seen over Royston Road, to the east of the reserve recording area, and 2 Lesser Whitethroats sang from the Albert Street Allotments (JP).

A Waved Umber moth found its way into Dave Standish's kitchen last night at Firth Avenue, Low Cudworth.

A new species of butterfly here - Wall Brown! 13 species of butterfly also included 7 Small Copper, 14 Dingy Skipper, 2 Small Heath, 1 Holly Blue,  and 2 male Brimstone. 
 
Day flying moths were 1 Burnet Companion, 5 Small Yellow Underwing,  7 Mother Shipton, 1 Brown Silver Line and 2 Silver Y.
Also 3 female Broad-bodied Chaser, 18 Squash Bugs, the beetle Cantharis rustica, the Weevil Platyrhinus resinous and 7 Smooth Newts (Chris Parkin).

The north pair of Oystercatchers have hatched 2 very small young.

2 Tawny Owls were in their regular roost this morning, but had moved out of site by mid-day.

A Goldcrest sang near the hide and 3 House Matins flew north over the wader scrape.

Butterflies included 2m Brimstone. A Blue-tailed Damselfly was the first for this year.

Francis Hickenbottom visited this morning and provided us with a new species of fungi - Hawthorn Leaf Blight (Monilinia johnsonii).

2 Grey Partridges and a pair of Coot with 2 young.
 
12 Dingy Skippers were the first this year. Also 21 male Brimstone and 48 Orange-tips. A Small Yellow Underwing  moth was interesting (C. Parkin)

A Common Sandpiper spent the day on the wader scrape (JP et al).

It's good to know there are still 2 Grey Partridges around.

Insects included the first Small Heath of the Year, 12 Peacock, 2 Comma, 5 Speckled Wood, 2m Brimstone, 49 Orange-tips (15 of which were female), 1 Large White, 7 G.V. White, and 5 Small White.

Also of note Brown Silver Line moth, Green Tiger Beetle, Click Beetle (Athous haemorrhoidalis). Common Blue and Azure Damselfly were on the wing and the first Four Spot Chaser of the year. (Chris Parkin).

This afternoon 2 Cetti's Warblers sang as did Cuckoo and it gave good views.

There are several Greylag and Canada Goose broods now.

A Fox was laid in the sun for quite awhile.

Wintersett Res:

14 birds were ringed today:

Highlights of 3 Sedge Warblers,  1 Reed Warbler,   2  Garden Warblers, 

1 Blackcap and 1 female Cetti's Warbler (brood patch).   Common Tern 1.

A Green Woodpecker and a male Lesser Whitethroat were on the west bank. 

Also a control Sedge Warbler,  apparently ringed yesterday,  (but not here!!) 

Will be nice to see how far it moved overnight.

This morning 2 singing Cetti's Warbler, 5 Reed Warbler, 2 Sedge Warbler, 12 Chiffchaff and 6 Blackcap.

2 Grey Partridge were on a tilled field (L & A Corrall).

This afternoon a Common Sandpiper was on the wader scrape at 14.00hrs and an Oystercatcher flew south over the scrape at 16.00hrs. A Kingfisher flew over the reed beds (CG).

The Pink Feet had gone AWOL and were seen at Anglers Country Park (G.J. Speight)

86 species of bird were recorded in the area today - GJ Speight.

Biggest Dip - SWIFT! (there were 50 yesterday!)

A Water Rail was calling from the south east reed bed.

21 birds were ringed @Wintersett1 this morning with highlights of:

Reed Warbler 2,   Garden Warbler 2,   Blackcap 1,

Lesser Redpoll 5,  Willow Warbler 1 and Chiffchaff 1. 

Also - A Treecreeper was trapped on the clump.  Pete Smith.
