June is always a quiet month as birds keep a low profile during the process of raising their offspring. So far there have been 6 broods of Gadwall totalling 39 young, 5 broods of Mallard with 38 young and 1 brood of Tufted Duck with 7 young. Kingfisher has also bred, but recent heavy rain and diesel oil pollution finished off all 5 small cygnets, leaving both adults with oil on them.

5 Ringlet butterflies were on the wing today along with male & female Broad-bodied Chaser. Moths disturbed during management work were; Small Fan-foot, Cinnabar, Small Magpie and White Plume Moth.
My thanks to Russ.Boland, Rod Heeley, Richard Laverack and Keith Bannister for their assistance today.

Congratulations to Pete Middleton and my lovely former Spanish teacher Rosario on their marriage today.

Good news from the Sand Martin Box:

Nationally, there can't be many, if any,  artificial Sand Martin nest sites, that can boast an amazing 100%  occupancy.

Broomhill Flash Appreciation Note

Upon entering Broomhill Flash hide tonight I found this little note upstairs on the shelf. A very nice sentiment from who ever wrote it and to take the time to do it. Cheered me up no end! (All other notes must have a queens head on) Only kidding.

A magical night

Full moon last night coinciding with the Summer solstice - first time since 1967!  Good night to visit the stone circle - but not for mystic rituals.  Three or more nightjars calling, churring, flying.  Four sightings of woodcock may have involved just two birds.  Later at corner of Mortimer Road and Shaw Lane the nightjars were flying around within a few metres in a spectacular manner as well as calling and churring - again at least three birds.  Snipe drumming too.

We haven't had much luck with Mute Swans over the years, several attempts have failed for one reason or another. There have only been 2 successful pairs in more than 40 years, the first in 1985 followed by another in 2012. However, both cygnets died in the very wet spring of that year. Our latest resident pair showed no interest what so ever last year, but I am over the moon that they have produced 5 cygnets today! (Rod Heeley)

Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail and Willow Tit were on show today, but the main focus was invertebrates and wild flowers.
The highlight of today was a Eyed Hawk Moth resting on a buttercup stem in the full glare of the sun, most unusual. It had probably just emerged as it was in pristine condition. It looks like a good year for them as I caught one in my garden trap a couple of nights ago. (see below)

The one today was only the 3rd record, the previous two in 1988 and 2008.

Butterflies included 2 Dingy Skipper, 2 Common Blue, 2 Small Heath, Peacock, 2 Small Copper and a male Orange-tip.
It was perfect weather for dragonflies; 2 female and 1 male Broad-bodied Chaser were flying with Four Spot Chaser, Banded Demoiselle, Azure and Blue-tailed damsel.

Rabbit Ings
Painted Lady 3, Red Admiral, Brown Argus, Small Heath 42, Small Copper 2 and White Pinion Spotted moth.
