Old Moor Sofa

An update on the number of species recorded in the Old Moor Area this year, at the end of June the total was 162.

A further three species were added in July as follows - Honey Buzzard on 2nd (163), Common Crane on 18th (164) and Little Tern on 26th (165).

At the end of July 2015 the total was 155 therefore we are a further ten species better off this year.

A further 17 species were seen up to the end of July in 2015 and 2016 but not seen this year - Red Necked Grebe, Egyptian Goose, Bean Goose, Little Bittern, Night Heron, American Wigeon, Red Crested Pochard, Red Footed Falcon, Turnstone, Curlew Sandpiper, Laughing Gull, Gull Billed Tern, Long Eared Owl, Alpine Swift, Spotted Flycatcher, Redstart, Rock Pipit.

The hot weather continued throughout the month with flyover Common Crane and Honey Buzzard and fly through Little Tern being the only additions. Plenty of omissions as seen in the list above but still the glaring one being Turnstone.

For comparison some other inland sites totals are as follows:- Swillington Ings, West Yorkshire 166, Upton Warren, Worcestershire 136 and Potteric Carr, South Yorkshire 148.
