Chris Parkin and I called in this afternoon just in time to see the first Short-eared Owl flying over the flash in good sunlight at 14.00hrs. Soon after another 2 were airborne one of which caught a vole to the delight of the assembled photographers. 2 Buzzards flew over followed by a skein of about 120 Pink Feet Geese flying high WNW at 14.40hrs. ( Hibbert & Corrall) Then a small group of finches including 15 Goldfinches and 5 Lesser Redpolls alighted on an adjacent bush. The owls were still active when we left to look for Little Owl, which sits in a tree where the wooden pallets are. Sure enough it was there on its usual perch. I also saw a Song Thrush briefly, it must be several weeks since I have seen one anywhere.
We called in at Carlton Marsh at dusk, no Bittern yet, but with cold weather due to arrive from the east that might change. At least 3 Snipe left north and we found more evidence of Water Vole at another site and a dog Fox was barking as darkness fell.
