Wintersett - Here come the Gulls 13.01.13

Quite a list to report on this very cold and frosty day .
Long staying goodies first. The female Long-tailed Duck is still on Anglers CP  and the 2 male Scaup are still on Wintersett Res.

Coot 276,   Water Rail 3,   Moorhen 14,   Mute Swan 14,  Greylag Goose 8,   Canada Goose 70,   Great Crested Grebe 20,   Little Grebe 1,   Teal 13,   Wigeon 201,   Mallard 63,  Gadwall 44,   Tufted Duck 163,   Pochard 211,  Goldeneye 73,   Goosander 34,   Cormorant 10,   Grey Heron 5,   Lapwing 79,   Snipe 1.
Highlights of the day were, without doubt, the gulls.
On Anglers CP shallows early this morning there were 2 Yellow-legged Gulls - a 1st W and a 3rd W on the islands to the right of the Sand Martin Box.  Then from mid to late morning there was a new 1st W Caspian Gull wearing a metal ring, in the same area.
The ACP Gull Roost tonight attracted the ususal 1st W Caspian Gull and 5 Yellow-legged Gulls - 2 adults, the 3rd W from earlier, and 2 1st W birds.  Other counts here: Herring Gull 323,  Great Black-backed Gull 23,  Lesser Black-backed Gull 8.
The Wintersett Roost held  8500 Black-headed Gull,  1500 Common Gulls  190 Herring Gull,  22 Great Black-backed  Gull and 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull.
Finally, further highlights, to top off a great day, were a Short-eared Owl  flying high  from Rabbit Ings northwards over to Wintersett and  2 Bitterns roosting in WRes. reedbeds at dusk.
