Sorry but I'm not too well up on butty's - when you say possible first record this century what do you mean? First record for Hugset Wood this century? Thanks in anticipation.

I have checked today with both Sheffield and Barnsley Record Centres. They have no known records EVER for this species in our region, let alone Hugset Wood.

Yorkshire known records for VC63 for this species are very old and as far as I am aware this fritillary was last seen in Yorkshire VC63 in 1992 at Rimington. There are no official records of this species in Hugset Wood, according to the Yorkshire branch of Butterfly Conservation, up to 2005. That is why I am waiting for their update. This sighting may represent a wanderer from Cumbria, or from the South West of Britain. I hope that helps to make it clearer.

Arthur Whitaker recorded it in his diaries from New Park Spring in 1901.
A YNU Circular from 1953 stated that it occurred rarely at Bretton
(Park?).
Nice find Alwyn.
