1/6/20 Midhope Res + nearby area

Out from 7-10pm on a fine evening. Midhope Res contained a surprise in the form of a Great Crested Grebe which is a patch tick for me. I recall seeing me one on Langsett Res a few years back and know they occur on Morehall Res but it’s a first for me here.

At least 3 adult Little Grebes were present with two trilling and a pair of Tufted Ducks were keen to see off a third adult bird. A female Teal quietly fed, although no young seen, and a further pair left the res east towards dusk. A Mallard with 4 young was also seen.

In the woodland fringe an adult Chiffchaff was feeding 4 fledglings and there was a family party of Long-tailed Tits too. Siskin called but were hard to pin-point and 3 Redpolls were seen with 2 in suitable breeding terrain. Willow Warblers sang throughout.

On the moorland fringe, I finally connected with a Hobby albeit very briefly. A Buzzard hunted and a Cuckoo called towards dusk. 4 well grown fledged Lapwing were in fields and Curlew alarmed. Finally, a Woodcock flew east calling at 9.30pm.

Ending on a negative note, a large fire was blazing in Wharncliffe Woods as I drove home and campers had left their debris at Midhope Res...what is it with some people!?!
