Bolton Ings - 6th January

My first visit for 2 weeks following my Xmas and New Year break in Spain, the weather was at least dry and 6c and although seemed mild at first then felt cold. The day seemed quite spring like and already the Black Headed Gulls are sorting their nesting positions out, also present were a healthy 61 Common Gulls. 2 Great Crested Grebes confirmed the spring like conditions but 5 Goldeneye confirmed it was still winter. Full list :- Grey Heron 3, Mute Swan 8, Canada Goose 64, Cormorant 4, Great Crested Grebe 2, Little Grebe 6, Mallard 53, Teal 15, Gadwall 75, Shoveler 6, Wigeon 9, Tufted Duck 22, Pochard 23, Goldeneye 1 drake + 4 females, Goosander 5, Coot 185, Moorhen 8, Black Headed Gull 188, Common Gull 61, Lapwing 44, Golden Plover 2, Kestrel 1, Green Woodpecker 2, Grey Wagtail 2, Siskin 3, Jay 3.

Had a walk onto Old Moor in the afternoon and didnt see any Smew, but did see the following:- Pochard 23mm, Goldeneye 1 drake mm + 1 drake and 2 females mere, Great Crested Grebe 1mm, Barn Owl 1mm, Redshank 1 wader scrape, Shelduck 1 mere, LBB Gull 1 mere, Common Gull 12 mere, Golden Plover c200 over, Goosander 10 wader scrape.
