Carlton Marsh

58 Pink Feet Geese flew very high west at 08.25hrs. A Bittern flew at reed top height from the southern part of the marsh before alighting near the ringing rides. (Rod Heeley) I had been watching one in front of the hide for a while so obviously there are still two birds here.  The one in the reed bed to the left of the hide climbed up the reeds and was preening for at least 25 minutes before it took flight to the opposite reed bed at 11.08hrs. It was seen again at 17.45hrs.  I know it's awkward for visitors because we have to keep the hide locked, but if you are lucky one of us may be on site to open it. Luckily the visiting birders we had yesterday and today managed to get really good close views from the hide.
Also of note were 10 Siskin, 2 Water Rail calling, Grey Wagtail, Buzzard, 14 Shoveler and several Goldcrests.
A Fox was prowling the Wader Scrape at dusk.
