Dove-tale

Wombwell Ings today - John Hewitt
A visit to Wombwell Ings and Gypsy Marsh this afternoon. Little of note at the latter but the visit to Wombwell Ings was interesting mainly to see what the heavy rain had produced. The Ings looked well as can be seen from above. Bird-wise, a few bits including a good count (for time of year) of 9 Grey Herons. Also Little Egret but number of ducks remain quite low. The walk to Doveside was interesting for the spectacle. The only birds of note there however, were a pair of Siskin in the alders with about 20 Goldfinch and a single Goldcrest. A few more of my pictures below:

The River Dove
Doveside, looking well.
The access bridge over the Dove. Don't blame the Darfield people for any disturbance today!

Wombwell Ings looking great.
There should be that amount of water on Wombwell Ings EVERY winter.
The wet grassland guidelines (produced by the RSPB) say there should be between 30% to 60% of the land covered in shallow water during winter.
At the moment there is usually about 15% to 20%. See Google Earth.
If water levels were right on there we would obviously get more birds in winter such as wigeon and pintail etc etc.
So why arn't the RSPB following their own guidelines on Wombwell Ings?
