Bolton Ings - 10th February

A truly miserable day weather-wise, 1c at 8 o'clock this morning with persistent snow/sleet which turned to rain and lasted all day.  Viewing very difficult but managed to see/count the following:- Mute Swan 6, Canada Goose 17, Little Grebe 2, Great Crested Grebe 1, Mallard 15, Gadwall 77, Wigeon 2, Teal 4, Shoveler 4, Tufted Duck 17, Pochard 23, Godeneye 3(1 drake), Goosander 2, Coot 134, Moorhen 5, Black Headed Gull 131, Common Gull 1. All counts down on last week, as per usual for Webs count day, no Cormorants and no raptors or waders for second week running.

After a hot drink in the cafe onto Old Moor where the weather was the same but the birds were much better. 4 Oystercatchers were new in on the Mere and a Black Tailed Godwit was flying onto the field pools with the Lapwing flock. Also on the field pools were plenty of Golden Plover and Shoveler, they had already been counted. On the Main Marsh were 9 Goldeneye with 2 on the Mere also. 2 Jays were in the slag willows. On the mere were 2 Redshank and a Shelduck.

I returned later for the Goosander roost which numbered 43 all on the Wader Scrape where Shelduck had increased to 5. The Black Tailed Godwit was now feeding on the Mere.

Highlights from todays Webs count:- Shoveler 74, Wigeon 549, Teal 297, Gadwall 320, Tufted Duck 144, Pochard 72, Goldeneye 19, Little Grebe 15, Coot 483.
