I couldn’t leave without sending you all a goodbye message!
To be honest, I am not very good at goodbyes – here goes.....
As you may or may not know, I have decided to leave Old Moor to take up a new job, with the RSPB at Middleton Lakes (the old Drayton Bassett Pits for those who cling to the old names J). It was a difficult decision to make, as I love the Dearne Valley and the team I work with but this new job is a step up and it felt like the right move to the right place. I hope Middleton Lakes can become the Old Moor of the Midlands! Breeding bitterns are on my list of aspirations!
I want to say a thank you to all the birders who have been nothing but kind, helpful and accepting over the past 4 years and at times rather entertaining! It’s been a pleasure to work at a reserve with such a passionate, knowledgeable bunch of like-minded individuals. More nature reserves should have a birding network like the Barnsley area does.
No doubt our paths will cross again in the future. If you are ever at Middleton, you are more than welcome to pop in for a cuppa! And when more rarities turn up on Wath, I’ll be straight back J

Old Moors loss is Middletons gain- no doubt about that. Wishing you all the very best in your next adventure. We'll all be keeping an eye on the pager for Middleton Lakes news in future - a good appointment RSPB.
