Wintersett 16.10.17

13 - 18 degrees, warm with 8/8 mist, that cleared slowly.  It was calm to a very light south westerly by midday, but the sky was an eerie pale yellow with a red sun.  This was caused by ex hurricane Ophelia picking up Saharan sand and particles from forest fires in Portugal.  Wind picked up speed to fresh and gusty during afternoon.
Anglers CP:  5 Grey Partridge were in the car park field.  4 Goosander.  Shoveler 37 + 8 WRes.,
Wintersett Res: 3 male Cetti's Warblers were heard - north bank,  north west bank and west bank marsh.  A Water Rail was in the boathouse reeds.  Wigeon 75 + 59 CHRes.,   Goldeneye 1.  Chiffchaff 1.  Yellow-legged Gull 1.
Lepidoptera:  3 Red Admiral were on ivy at Pits Wood.
Overnight moth trapping was disappointing.  Best were: Grey shoulder Knot,  Brick,  Yellow-line Quaker,  Red-line Quaker.  A Light Emerald was  a very late 2nd brood emergence.

Sun with Saharan Sand  11.00 hrs    WRes.   ASmith
