A little bit of light relief for you. Last night was perfect for catching moths, the wind was light and the humidity was high. I think July generally produces the most colourful species and last night was no exception. Visitors to my lamp included Swallow-tailed, Buff Arches, Clouded Border, Peppered Moth, Elephant Hawk, Plain Golden Y, Poplar Grey, Ruby Tiger, Dot Moth, Blackneck, True Lover's Knot, 2 Scarce Silver Lines and the once very rare Small Ranunculus. The Box Hedge Moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is classed as a micro moth, an Asian species that has spread across Europe. The one I caught last year was the first for South Yorkshire, here is another one.

Meanwhile Chris Parkin was 'Mothing' at his home on Barnsley Road where he caught a Poplar Hawk Moth and a Small Ranunculus.

Dave Smith caught 30 species in his Carlton garden which included 4 Elephant Hawk Moths and a V Pug.
