The Smew remained on the Willow Pool until dusk. Also roosting were 55 Goosanders and five Goldeneye. Additionally, 140 Pink-feet flew west at 09.35.
Interesting counts from Adwick today: Grey Partridge 28, Yellohammer 35, Reed Bunting 25.
A couple of great shots of the Smew below from Keith Pickering.
Although the species is now occurring almost annually in the Old Moor area it still causes excitement, particularly a stonking drake like this. Wintersett birders (where Smews are frequent) may wonder what all the fuss is about - try to think of it as like seeing five waders (there) on one island!
