20/5/20 Wharncliffe Chase

A stunning morning on the Chase as the sun rose early doors which banished the memories of recent wind chilled visits. Birds performed accordingly with c.70 species seen or heard.

A Cuckoo sang throughout at the southern end and at least 12 Tree Pipits were seen with a new territory in the SE corner. Several sang close together on the path along the SW boundary. Swallows  are now in residence on most farm buildings and Lapwings remain territorial although no evidence of successful breeding yet (which I’d like to establish).

Another species I’d like to confirm as breeding is Wheatear and 2 were seen in suitable habitat..have all migrant arrivals passed through yet? A Redstart sang subtlety in Roundabout and 2 Whitethroats  sang near HH Farm.

Several (abundant) Willow Warblers sang throughout with the odd Blackcap, Garden Warbler and Chiffchaff. The Wood Warbler remains on territory in Greno Woods and showed relatively well.

Skylarks were numerous in certain locations with plenty of RL Partridge, Goldfinch, Linnet and Meadow Pipit, many of which were carrying food.

Also 2 Pied Wagtail territories, several Stock Doves singing, 3 Reed Bunting singing, House Sparrows nesting around the farms and single Green Woodpecker, Buzzard, Kestrel, Siskin, Song Thrush and GS Woodpecker (drumming).

At least 3 pairs of Mistle Thrush were carrying food plus a Stonechat pair in the SE corner. 2 Cormorants flew west and 5 LBB Gull went over (4 adults, 1 imm).
