Old news from Old Moor

Yesterdays sightings included a Woodcock, a Jack Snipe and 3 Snipe all on the Gypsy Marsh. Old Moor had 9 Goldeneye on the mere, Little Egret on the Field Pools and at least 6 Redshank, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 Ringed Plovers and a Green Sandpiper scattered about the reserve. A few sightings from the weekend which will be excellent if confirmed were an Avocet and Chiffchaff on Sunday and 2 Sand Martins on Saturday which would be the earliest ever , 4 were reported from Pugneys on Sunday. The Cettis Warbler was heard singing on Saturday.

Some really good stuff there - its a pity none of it from the RSPB is getting onto the national bird information websites !!!
Sand martin is an excellent record.
As for the Avocet - is it time to start preparing the water levels in the valley for this species and other species of wader to encourage them to breed here?
