Old Moor Area - March 30th

Spent all morning in the Old Moor area, started at Edderthorpe where the Avocets were down to 3, Shelduck 3, Redshank 7, Green Sandpiper 1, Ringed Plover 1, Snipe 1 and Golden Plover still an healthy 322. Next onto the mere at Old Moor where there were Oystercatcher 2, LBB Gull 2 and a Common Gull. On the Wader Scrape Avocets were down to 2 from 4 yesterday, Redshank 3 and Oystercatcher 1 (a Curlew was present yesterday). On the field pools were Oystercatcher 5, Redshank 4 and Snipe 9, I counted 44 Snipe on Wednesday on the Field Pools. I finished my visit on Bolton Ings where a female Goosander was present plus, Great Crested Grebe 6, Cormorant 10, a male Ruddy Duck, Oystercatcher 4, Redshank 1, Kestrel 1 and Sparrowhawk 1. Further reports came from Wombwell Ings where there were another 2 Avocets, Little Ringed Plover 3, Redshank 10+, Wigeon down to 36, and the circular trans pennine trail where 23 Chiffchaffs were counted plus 3 Blackcaps, Spaarowhawk 2 and a Kestrel.

Great post - Much better to see what birds ARE in the area for visitors and regulars alike.
What are 'bog stranded'(???) to some are still worth watching to others.

'Bog stranded' is a little bit like 'bog standard' except the little pencil thing has gone walkabout so you can't alter the thread after you have posted.
But thanks for the leson in gud spelin.

And yes you have to take your hat off to the guys that regularly watch the moorland ressers etc. But its all relative - and if a site is not coming up to expectations because of factors that should and can be easily put right then its worth mentioning.
No habitat = no birds.
