Barrow Tip

15 species of butterflies today included Meadow Brown 618, Ringlet 364, Gatekeeper 258 and a Red Admiral, which is very scarce this year so far. Purple Hairstreak was also present. (Chris Parkin)

A new brood of 5 Little Grebe today and some lovely Chub in Cudworth Dike. Not bad for arguably the most polluted water course in South Yorkshire. Amongst the many wild flowers on the railway embankment none are sweeter scented than Ladies Bedstraw. It was actually used as bedding in times past hence the name.

Since the influence of a blocking high pressure system sent temperatures soaring from the 4th of July my highest recorded temperature in the garden is 30.1c (86f) on the 13th. Today came close at 29.3c, equalling the temperature on the 12th. This brings back memories of the summer of 1995, which was equal in many ways to the 1976 fabulous summer when temperatures hit the 32c (90f) several times.
