Bolton Ings - 28th July

Three weeks since my last visit and an autumnal feel to today rather than a mid summer one last time. The overnight rain had stopped and clear blue skies at first but clouded over later, breezy but still warm. The river was up following the rain, about 4 feet but the paths had dried out ok. Highlights today were 2 Little Egrets, at least 34 Little Grebes including a brood of 5, 2 broods of Great Crested Grebes, Coots building up to 218 but Black Headed Gulls moving out, only 80 seen. Full List:- Grey Heron 2, Little Egret 2, Mute Swan 4 ads + 6 juvs, Canada Goose 55, Grey Lag Goose 27, Great Crested Grebe pair + 3 juvs and pair + 2 juvs, Little Grebe 34 (ads & juvs), Mallard 12 + brood of 1, Gadwall 6 + brood of 7, Tufted Duck 43 + broods of 20, 6, 5, 4, 4, 3 & 3 + many other chicks unattached, Pochard 8 + brood of 4, Coot 218 ads & juvs + 1 new chick, Moorhen 12, Lapwing 37, Oystercatcher 1, Black Headed Gull 80 (46 juvs), LBB Gull 1, Common Tern 1 ad + 1 juv, Sand Martin 4, Green Woodpecker 1, Kingfisher 1, Blackcap 2 singing, Chiffchaff 1 singing, Whitethroat 1.

Looked onto Old Moor form the old railway line and saw 1 adult and 1 juv Avocet on the Wader Scrape.
