Bolton Ings et al - Sunday 16th March

Clear blue skies this morning but a very strong westerly made viewing difficult, 11c when I started out at 10.00 am. Highlights today were winter birds hanging on with 7 Goldeneye including 3 drakes, spring arrivals with 5 singing Chiffchaffs and first signs of breeding with both Mute Swans sitting. Full list :- Mute Swan 7, Canada Goose 24, Grey Lag Goose 11, Cormorant 2, Great Crested Grebe 4, Little Grebe 11, Mallard 10, Teal 10, Wigeon 6, Gadwall 16, Tufted Duck 56, Pochard 14, Goldeneye 7, Coot 144, Moorhen 8, Lapwing 2, Oystercatcher 4, Black Headed Gull 295, Common Gull 6, LBB Gull 5, Herring Gull 14, Kestrel 1, Grey Wagtail 2, Kingfisher 1, Chiffchaff 5.

Paid a visit onto the Reedbeds at Old Moor this evening, no booming Bitterns heard but 2 birds seen in flight. Also the Mediterranean Gull was flying about,  a Water Rail was calling, a Barn Owl was hunting and a Tawny Owl calling.

WeBS count day today, selected highlights being - Goosander 24, Little Grebe 71, Tufted Duck 273, Redshank 13, Pintail 1 drake, Shelduck 2, Jack Snipe 1 and Green Sandpiper 2.
