Last night's remarkably warm air saw our first mothing session of the year, with Harry Beaumont. 6 new species were taken. They were Water Carpet 6, Early Tooth Striped 2 (male & female), Twin Spot Quaker 1, Small Quaker 1, Brindled Pug 1 and Pale Pinion 1. Also of note Purple Thorn, Early Thorn, Shoulder Stripe, Satellite and Chestnut. 16 macro species. The micro Acleris cristana is the 7th VC63 record and the first for the Barnsley area (HEB).
At dusk a Woodcock was 'roding' over the car park plantation followed later by Tawny Owl and Barn Owl and later still by a calling Long-eared Owl high over the car park. Our recently arrived Cetti's Warbler sang until after dark, but was seen earlier with another that was almost certainly a female (CG, D. M. Smith, G, Miller, C. Parkin & H.E. Beaumont).
