An awesome record breaking roost tonight at
Wintersett produced a total of 3,600 Herring Gulls which exceeds the previous
highest of 3,500 in January 1990. GBB gulls were at a modest 228 birds.
It also produced exceptional numbers of
other great birds, with an exceptional influx of Caspian Gulls. Proceedings
began with a 1st winter Caspian Gull on the Country Park at 14.55
followed by a third winter bird there at 15.15. Soon after, the juvenile
Kumliens Gull was found on the Top Res and this was joined later on by the juv
Glaucous Gull.
Another three 1st winter Caspian
Gulls were picked up on the Country Park between 16.00 and 16.20 hrs, bringing
the total there to a record 5 birds (4 x 1st w and a 3rd w). As the
evening drew to a close a 2nd winter Iceland Gull was found on the
Top Res, with a 1st winter bird found on the Country Park at 16.50.
