Carlton Marsh - Egretta garzetta

Spent this afternoon trying to relocate a Little Egret that was reported at 10.45am. It was only see-able from Cudworth Bypass looking back to Bleachcroft Pond, in a hawthorn bush.  Later in the evening it flew between there and the marsh. It was our second record of it.  Some of the Barnsley Naturalist Society members managed to see it when they visited this evening.  Also present were male Teal, Tufted Duck with 8 young, Little Grebe nest with 1 egg, Kingfisher 2, Buzzard, Green and Great Spot Woodpeckers, Little Owl 4 and a Grasshopper Warbler was reeling.

Dragonflies airborne in the warmth of the sun were Brown Hawker 1, Green Lestes 15 and Blue Tailed Damsel 6.

Yesterday's butterfly counts included Ringlet 130, Small Skipper 67, Gatekeeper 3, Red Admiral 1, Meadow Brown 61 and Blackneck Moth 1. That latter appears to be quite common here now. (Hibbert & Corrall)

Amongst last night's moth catch at home were Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and what appears to be Varied Coronet!  I apologise for the poor quality of the photo.
