Cool start became sunny and warm. DRY ALL DAY!
The highlight of the day was a large flock of Common Crossbills feeding around the woodyard in Haw Park Wood during the afternoon. Brilliant views were to be had of males and females, but the majority were juveniles. They were feeding on larch cones and dropping down to drink, along with the siskins. There were at least 57 Common Crossbills and 15 Siskin, so it appears the irruption of these two species is gaining strength.
Wintersett Res: Water Rail 1 calling, Common Tern 7, Cormorant 6, Grey Wagtail 1, Gadwall - broods of 6 and 2, Grasshopper Warbler - 2 juveniles were ringed, Siskin 2 flew over.
Anglers CP: Siskin 6 over, Nuthatch - 2 flew high over car park towards Willow Wood 12.20hrs.
Butterflies: Painted Lady (ACP), Red Admiral 3 (WR), also the first Small Skipper of the year (WR)
Moths: Lunar Hornet Moth - sitting on mist net (WR), Oak Eggar - flying along Haw Park Lane.
Dragonflies: The first Brown Hawkers were seen at WR and HPW.
