Spent a cold hour and a quarter along Stone Circle path tonight to get good bursts of song, brief flight call and very quick glimpse of a Nightjar in flight. Then on the way home on the road at Midhope a nightjar sitting on the tarmac caught in the headlights. I stopped a few yards from it and the bird just stayed there until I moved forward. A few yards further on a second bird did exactly the same. This may be familiar to some of you but is a new experience for me.

Was this near the turn off to Midhope Res. ie near Barnside Lodge?
No Martin, as you drive on Shaw Lane from the raptor watch point towards Back Lane the road bends left and the birds were on the bend.
Thanks Ian. That's a new site.
Hi Ian,
I'm new to the area and have been keen to catch up with some nightjars. Is the Stone Circle path you mention above Langsett Reservoir?
Cheers
Dave
Dave,
The Stone Circle is a nice walk which can yield good birds at any time of year. To find details of where it is go to this website ~

There's room to park a couple of cars by the start of the walk just opposite Broomhead Hall. Walking further along the obvious track that passes the Stone Circle is a great walk.
