Edderthorpe early a m

In the 'Houghton maize field' (previously a washland) the Oystercatcher has a single chick. A juv Long-eared Owl has dispersed a way from its nest and was by the Dearne river bridge being mobbed by Blackbirds. Edderthorpe held;- Shoveler 2, Coot 135, Ringed Plover 1 and a adult Cuckoo.

Yes it's very frustrating to see this washland continually being drained and damaged year after year.
The RSPB and Environment Agency need to be made fully aware that you and others such as Bernard, Ivan, Alan and Cliff have an interest in seeing this site restored to how it used to be.
A restored Houghton Washland coupled with the already brilliant Edderthorpe Ings would make a fantastic birding site.
It's up to us birders to put a bit of pressure on the people with authority to make sure this area is secured - ASAP.
Sadly, even though the RSPB manage a part of Houghton Washland; it isn't even mentioned in the minutes of the last RSPB / Birders meeting.
