The Edge

Broomhill Flash mid AM-  Only a small area on the western side was not frozen and this is where most of the bird activity activity was taking place. 2 Mute Swans flew in at 9.45am and proceeded to do a passable impression of icebreakers, doubling the area of open water. Other birds present included 2 Grey Heron, 35 Teal, 30 Wigeon, 4 Goldeneye, 2 Pochard,6 Gadwall, 5 Shoveler, 8 Tufted Duck, 18 Golden Plover, 7 Red Legged Partridge, 1 Common Gull, 1 Meadow Pipit,1 Mistle Thrush,1 Kestrel and 154 Coot.

Bolton Ings late AM- The highlight was watching a Bittern fly about 100m west over the reeedbeds. Again activity was around the small areas of ice-free water and 6 Mute Swans(2adult+4juv) were doing ice breaking duty. Birds present included 1 Cormorant, 3 Grey Heron, 2Little Grebe, 11 Greylag, 13 Canada Geese, 34 Pochard, 32 Gadwall, 32 Mallard, 18 Tufted Duck, 3 Goldeneye (1m+2f), & Shoveler, 3 Goosander92m+1F), 2 Teal, 2 Wigeon, 11 Common Gull, 1 LBB Gull, 2 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 3 Redpoll, 1 Green Woodpecker, 100+ Redwing and aflock of 200+ Woodpigeon.
