Bolton Ings et al - Sunday 1st February

Following last weeks "springlike" weather it was back to winter this morning, 3c when I started out felt like -3c with the strong biting wind. Brightened up later but felt no warmer and even had a snow shower around midday. Good start to day with great views of a Buzzard over Bolton Tip, a male Stonechat surviving on the Western pond and a great count of 17 Goldeneye on the Eastern pond. Shoveler down to 57 but many of the wildfowl were sheltering from the strong wind. Full list :- Grey Heron 3, Mute Swan 8, Canada Goose 39, Cormorant 1, Great Crested Grebe 2, Mallard 30, Teal 7, Gadwall 30, Shoveler 57, Pochard 33, Tufted Duck 20, Goldeneye 17 (4 drakes, 1 imm drake, 12 females), Coot 43, Moorhen 4, Snipe 1, Black Headed Gull 19, Common Gull 2, Herring Gull 2, Buzzard 1, Kestrel 2, Stonechat 1 male, Goldcrest 1, Grey Wagtail 1.

Visited Old Moor later for the roost - Buzzard 1 up over Bolton, Goosander 53 on Wader Scrape, Goldeneye 3 on Mere, Barn Owl 1, Little Egret 1 and Cormorant 3 roosting in Willows.

No predictions this week after last weeks failure.
