Old Moor Nocturnal Report

The evening started well tonight with 4 Whimbrel going West over the Reedbeds pointed out by the departing Teatime Team. Also finished well with a Black Tailed Godwit dropping onto the Wader Scrape at 22.00, at least 2 Common Sandpipers were calling and a Redshank was mobbing me as I left along Green Lane. Earlier on the Main Marsh the Wood Sandpiper was still present with 2 Green Sands and 2 Barn Owls were hunting. A brood of 5 Tufted Ducklings had no mum and a female Gadwall had a brood of 3 Gadwall and 2 Tufted Ducklings.

The roost tonight had Grey Heron 4, Cormorant 14 & Little Egret 15. I actually only saw 7 Egrets come in tonight as follows - 2 @ 20.06, 2 @ 20.15, 1@ 20.42, 1 @ 20.53 and finally 1 @ 21.03. However there were at least 3 Egrets in when I arrived and later 14 birds were counted by DMW looking from the River whilst 1 was still feeding on the Wader Scrape. All the Egrets apart from 1 came in from up the valley tonight and 1 juvenile was identified.
