Old Moor Nocturnal Report

Arrived late tonight therefore went straight to the Wath Ings Hide for the Egret roost. A good roost again tonight with numbers steadily building up with 21 birds roosting tonight. 3 birds were already in when I arrived and they then came in as follows :- 1 @ 20.34, 4 @ 20.55, 3 @ 20.57, 2 @ 20.59, 1 @ 21.13, 1 @ 21.20, 1 @ 21.23, 1 @ 21.24, 2 @ 21.36, 1 @ 21.40 and finally 1 @ 21.50. All the birds tonight came from up the valley apart from 1 and nearly all the birds are adults.

A major surprise were 3 Pintail that swam out from under the willows and also 3 adult and 5 juvenile Redshank on the Main Marsh, the young Redshank are not fully grown but can fly and look strange with their small wings. Also on the mud were Snipe 1 and Green Sandpiper 2, Black Tailed Godwit 7 flew south and a Barn Owl was hunting.

Again it was pleasing to see many broods of wildfowl, 3 broods of Shoveler 6, 5 & 4 and the Motherless Tufted Duck brood of 4 are still surviving.
