Edderthorpe, Thursday

Still excellent for waders down here at the moment. The Little Stint remains for its fourth day, Dunlin 6, Ruff 1, Ringed Plover 24 (at least 9 had left high to the north by 07.00), LRP 3, no sign of the drake Garganey which was still present yesterday. Lapwings appear to be having a disastrous breeding season on the Flash and at Houghton Washlands. Only 2 broods of chicks have been seen and each for only a single day before disappearing, 3 nests were ploughed over by the farmer and most adults appear to have given up the breeding attempt this year, only 35 were counted today, most stood around in silage fields. Thank goodness for the adjacent fenced area at Symphony where once again Lapwings are raising plenty of chicks!

Graham, the Drake Garganey was seen on Houghton Washlands on Wed. 20th May at irregular intervals.
