Life on the edge (of Old Moor)

Broomhill Flash- 70+ Swifts  and 60+ House Martins flying low over the flash at 9am. 27 Tufted Duck, 14 Gadwall, 2 Little Grebe, 1 Ruddy Duck, 1 Shoveler and 1 Teal were on the water. Also present were 2 Red-legged Partridge, 1 Grey Partridge, 1 Avocet and 1 Kestrel.

Bolton Ings- Singing males included 13 Chiffchaff, 8 Willow Warbler, 7 Blackcap,7 Wren, 5 Chaffinch, 2 Whitethroat, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Yellowhammer and 1 Garden Warbler. On the water were 32 Tufted Duck, 20 Gadwall, 6 Pochard, 2 families of Mute Swans9 ( broods of 2 and 4), 4 Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Common Tern and 1 male Wigeon.  The amount of Giant Hogweed next to the old railway path is a cause for concern.  The sap can cause blisters and scarring and a small amount in the eye can cause temporary or permanent blindness.

Wombwell Ings- Another very quiet day with 10 + Mallard, 3 Gadwall, 10 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag Goose, 5 singing Skylarks,  2 Grey Heron, 2 male Reed Buntings. 1 Shoveler and 1 Redshank.
