Old Moor - 16th June

Plenty to see at Old Moor today, the 2nd summer Mediterranean Gull was present on the Wader Scrape. 14 adult Avocets and now 4 broods of chicks (4, 2, 2, 2) also on Wader Scrape as well as 8 Oystercatchers, 2 Ringed Plovers and 3 Little Ringed Plovers. A duck count revealed 200+ Gadwall plus at least 6 broods now, Tufted Duck 90, Shoveler 10, Pochard 6 and Teal 11 (10 drakes). A female Yellow Wagtail was seen on Wath Ings and also 2 Barn Owls. The Bitterns are being seen more now, both the male, female and one of the juveniles have been seen today, all 3 juveniles plus both adults were seen yesterday. Finally a Red Kite was seen passing over at 12.30.

Didn't we lose one of the avocet chicks to magpies?

I saw one predated by a magpie and think the other chick from the same brood was also lost the following day These were the ones that were viewed from the family hide.

Thats right, the pair that moved their 2 chicks from the wader scrape to the front of the family hide made a bad choice. Both chicks were lost.
